Look Back at the April 30th Meeting:

CLIMATE CHANGE IN OUR BACKYARD

The distinguished panel of speakers provided valuable information on the causes of climate change and its effect on northeast Ohio.  Their message was both urgent and hopeful.  While the global impact of climate change will include rising sea levels and extreme weather events, in Ohio the effects will include increased insect-borne diseases, growing algae blooms, severe storms that will affect infrastructure, and more. Ohio is sixth in emissions in the country, yet more populous states have lower emissions.  Closer to home, Rocky River has fallen below the Cuyahoga County average in tree-canopy coverage.

There are many ways each of us can make small changes that have a cumulative impact.  These include reducing energy usage in our homes and transportation, purchasing locally grown food, and planting more trees.  We are also members of churches, schools, civic organizations, and businesses where our advocacy can be multiplied.  And, importantly, we are voters who can make our voices heard to current and future legislators.

Our thanks again to the speakers.  They are noted below with links to their organizations for more information.

●      Grant Goodrich, Director of the Great Lakes Energy Institute

●      Jim Rokakis, Vice President, Western Reserve Land Conservancy; Director, Thriving Communities Institute
●      Bob Shields, Former Chair, Ohio Chapter of the Sierra Club

●      Dr. Nick Sutfin, Visiting Professor, Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences, Case Western Reserve University

We would also like to thank Armond Budish, Cuyahoga County Executive,  for attending and describing efforts by the county to increase the number of bike paths and tree planting.  We also thank the Westlake High School Environment Club for staffing a resource table during the event.
