Please join us for our monthly meeting on June 30 at the Rocky River Public Library. We will be hosting Marie Simon, the co-Chair and Vice President of Ohio Ballot Protection!

Ohio Ballot Protection (OBP) is a nonpartisan initiative dedicated to educating Ohioans about direct democracy and empowering citizens to participate in the ballot initiative process. Through education, outreach, and community engagement, OBP works to protect and strengthen Ohioans’ ability to have a direct voice in their government. Maria has a background in strategic partnerships and community engagement. She is passionate about civic participation and helping Ohioans better understand and access the democratic process. She will speak to us about voting protection projects as well as recent events targeting voting engagement.

Join the Rocky River Canvass with Ohio Dems

The Ohio Dems just announced several canvassing events for this weekend!

Join them this Sunday, June 21 in Rocky River at Erie Island Coffee Co (19300 Detroit Rd, Rocky River, 44116). 

The Ohio Dems team also announced a happy hour event Friday June 19th at 4:00PM in Rocky River at the Burntwood Tavern (19304 Detroit Rd, Rocky River, OH 44116).

One Final Thought

I’ll be honest, there are so many things going on at the State House its almost impossible to keep track of them all.  In our republican-led state government, the number of bills put forth that are everything from frivolous to dangerous attacks on our election system that its hard to know what to focus on.  But every once in a while, something really jumps out. HB 472 is one of those things. What started out as a bipartisan bill to help homeless people get state IDs has morphed, due to a last minute sub bill, into potentially requiring all mail-in voters to send copies of ID with their ballot. The bill has been fast-tracked, limiting discussion and voter feedback. Read more about this bill here. 

It’s urgent that we tell Governor DeWine to veto this terrible bill!

HB 472 was originally intended to provide ID free of charge for the homeless, but at the last minute it was hijacked and turned into a bill requiring voters to mail in copies of their ID or go to an online portal in order to vote absentee. If this bill becomes law, not only will many eligible voters be disenfranchised, voters’ personal information will be at risk in new and unprecedented ways. Common Cause Ohio is urgently calling for a veto.

TELL DEWINE TO VETO HB 472

Governor DeWine could sign the bill at any time. Please take action now. Send an email at .gtovernor.ohio.gov or call and leave a message. Try (614) 644-4357, or (614) 466-3555 — but be warned: his voicemail is often full!

Let Governor DeWine know that:

  • HB 472 was rushed, with no opportunity for a thorough review.
  • The Ohio Association of Elections Officials came out against the bill, and even Secretary of State Frank LaRose said it might have unintended consequences. 
  • The procedures for providing copies of IDs through the mail or via an online portal leaves Ohioans’ personal information vulnerable.
  • This is an unfunded and complicated mandate for boards of elections.
  • There are already bipartisan election procedures in place to confirm the identity of those voting by mail.

Stand Up Saturdays – Every Week!

Join your neighbors and the occasional dinosaur for Stand Up Saturdays to encourage residents to honk, wave and support democracy! On the Public sidewalks at the corner of Detroit Road and Crocker Road from 10am to noon every Saturday.
